TRANSITIONAL EMPLOYMENT

Program description
The goal of transitional employment is to give individuals work experience so they are able to transition into other jobs that will enhance their self-sufficiency. Individuals are hired as employees of Goodwill and may work in a variety of settings.

All individuals work with a case manager to assure that they are progressing toward self-sufficiency. While working, participants develop “soft skills” such as conflict resolution, adherence to scheduled work and break hours, communicating with supervisors, resolving situations that may interfere with work, etc.

At the start of transitional employment, the individual will work with Goodwill staff to identify goals and objectives. Once the goals and objectives have been obtained and maintained, typically within one year, individuals are transitioned to a community business site or referred to Goodwill’s resource center and placement services.

Entry into transitional employment begins with an intake session with a case manager at Goodwill’s Michigan Street office. Work assignments may be made at various locations to best suit the participant.

Entry requirements
Participants must have a major barrier to employment, which could include:

  • No work history
  • Sporadic work history
  • Prison record
  • Dependency on the public assistance system
  • Language barrier
  • Substance abuse, etc.

Additional Information
Individuals must have motivation to work and a desire to increase and expand their personal development. Individuals will work initially in an industrial setting.
