Why donate to Goodwill?

Your donations make Goodwill possible. When you donate to Goodwill, you’re funding our free programs throughout central and southern Indiana. Plus, Goodwill employs thousands of your fellow Hoosiers. >> Find out more about our free services.

What can I donate?

We want your stuff. This includes housewares, kitchen wares, clothing, shoes, books, furniture and everything else that you can drop off, with one exception, we ask that you not donate mattresses.

What about computers and electronics?

Yep! We want those too. Through a partnership with Dell, Goodwill recycles computers and electronics. We recycle any brand of computer and all the equipment used to operate them, such as cords, printers, mice, etc.

Is Goodwill “green?”

Goodwill has been green for decades. Anything that doesn’t make it to the sales floor is sold at our outlets with most of the remaining items being recycled.

Are donations tax-deductible?

All donations of clothing, household goods and similar items are tax-deductible on your itemized federal tax return, as are financial contributions. IRS standards prohibit nonprofit organizations from assigning values to donated items. Review IRS Publication 561 to learn how to determine the value of donated property. A commonly used IRS form is Form 8283: Noncash Charitable Contributions.

TurboTax’s ItsDeductible also provides online tracking of your donations.

For donations of cars, trucks and other vehicles, Goodwill will mail you a letter with the final auction price and other information needed for your itemized federal return.

How should I prepare my donations?

To make sure your donation process goes smoothly and that you’re donating items Goodwill can sell in our stores, follow these tips:

• Check for and remove any documents containing personal information – including tax statements, bank statements, medical records and similar items. To learn more about Indiana Code 24-4.9-2-10 which defines “personal information,” click here.
• Check your items for valuables before donating. Make sure you know for sure what items you want to give to Goodwill.
• Check pockets of clothing for jewelry, money and other valuables you might not be intending to donate.
• Separate clothing into different bags/boxes than household items.
• Test electrical equipment and battery-operated items to make sure they work.
• Include all pieces and parts to games, toys and household appliances.
